Driving in cold weather on icy roads has created its own challenges.
By the end of the week last week, we were mostly hearing about the winter equivalent of a hurricane that threatened to blanket much of the country in rain, ice, or snow. And, by the time the weekend was over, slushy roads were being blamed for collisions and fatalities.
It’s no secret that driving in bad weather or on slushy roadways is tricky and dangerous.
Travelandleisure.com offers this piece of advice: Be prepared for anything and everything. Furthermore, aarp.org says “winter driving means lots of challenges. For example, roads can be slick and icy. Also, blowing snow can cause poor visibility. And frosty weather can do a number on just about any vehicle. Therefore, it’s imperative to use safe driving techniques and to be prepared when winter comes along. That’s because, more than 70 percent of America’s roads are in areas that get an average of more than 5 inches of snow, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.”

- Warm up your car.
- Install skid chains or snow tires.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance.
- Pack for emergencies.
- Do your homework on the route.
Aarp.org offers these driving tips:
- Stay home.
- Get winter equipment ready.
- Get rid of ice and slush.
- Stay visible.
- Use proper stopping techniques.
- Avoid skidding.
