Drive Safely in Winter | Safe Winter Driving

Why Driving Safely Also Includes Adjusting your Vehicle’s Components.

Ask how to drive your car safely in winter and you could end up with a list of ways to help your vehicle and its equipment survive the cold. That’s because driving tips translate into tips about the car and its components. For  example, one group.com provides 15 tips when asked about driving your car on snow and ice. One tip is to consider buying winter tires because they are more flexible and “grippy” on cold roads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Weighs in on Safety This Winter

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also focuses on your driving safety and your car’s equipment.  For example, when discussing winter driving, the NHTSA warns about the need for tires to function well on icy roadways. Another example is they point out the problems presented by children’s winter coats and adjusting the fit of children’s car seats. “In colder weather, parents typically dress their children in winter coats. But it’s important to know that heavy outerwear can interfere with the proper harness fit on a child in a car seat. So, when your kid will be secured in a car seat, pick thin, warm layers. Also, place blankets or coats around your child after the harness is snug and secure for extra warmth. And, make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed. Finally, make sure that any children riding with you are in the right seat for their ages and sizes.”

More Tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

The NHTSA recommends you should check your car battery, charging system, and belts. Also, new floor mats might be a good idea. Because, the NHSTA says winter mats should be thicker and more rubbery. Furthermore, new windshield wipers and winter fluid are necessities as is enough coolant in your engine. Plus, don’t forget to visit your auto repair technician for a tune up.

One final tip, according to the NHSTA: Plan your route. For example, you may want to make sure you get to the Helicopter Holiday Lights Tour, so let’s stake out the safest route possible.
