Vehicles Beware: Bad Weather Brings on Potholes!
Wichita faced a record amount of snow over the weekend. But, we are expected to see a break before bad weather hits again at the end of this week. Unlike last weekend though, the weather that’s expected is rain, not snow. And, these weather conditions are perfect to set up the birth of potholes. According to bbc.com, potholes can caused when water enters cracks in the road’s surface and the subsequent freezing and thawing of water breaks chunks of the road free. And, the chunks that fall away leave a hole.
Potholes are certainly one of those road hazards that needs to be avoided.
Salinapost.com notes that potholes are responsible for damaging tires, denting rims, damaging wheels, dislodging wheel weights, displacing struts, dislocating shock absorbers, and damaging exhaust systems. Also, misaligned steering, bad suspension, and ruptured ball joints result from impacting a pothole. Add to that, the American Automobile Association says drivers should also avoid driving through puddles because they can be potholes in disguise.
Salinapost.com says the best protection against pothole damage is a tire that’s in good condition and properly inflated. This will provide a cushion between the car and the pothole. Drivers should also be alert to avoiding puddles and holes. They should slow down, check their alignment, and be alert for new noises and vibrations.
Theses conditions have sparked officials to warn drivers should be especially cautious about driving more slowly, keeping more distance between cars, and checking KanDrive before going anywhere.
