The New York Times has issued a report on the theft of catalytic converters.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants. And, according the the New York Times, there has been an increase in catalytic converters being stolen right off of vehicles. The report responded to the more than 600,000 catalytic converter thefts last year in the U.S.

The thefts, autoblog.com says, have “not only disabled vehicles but also involved dozens of shootings, truck hijackings and other violence. Replacement devices are often hard to get.”

But, as many car owners know, your catalytic converter can fail and need to be replaced.

Indications of a failing catalytic converter include poor acceleration, a rotten-egg smell from the exhaust, or the check-engine light coming on. Ultimately, your car may refuse to start, cars.com says.

Catalytic converter problems can be caused by age, contamination, or overheating, cars.com says.
