It seems as if school just got out for the summer, yet, here we are, with schools ready to reopen for the 2022-23 school year. You know what that means – not only is school in session but so are all those activities for kids that require more than a big of chauffeuring around town. This, of course, means your car is going to get a lot of use. If there’s something wrong, you’re going to know it pretty fast. But the best way to avoid car trouble and being stranded by the side of the road with one or more grumpy kids is to make sure your car is in good shape.
As NAPA says, “Believe it or not, it’s time for a little back to school car care. It might seem like summer started only yesterday, but fall is right around the corner. That makes now the perfect time to give your car some attention so it’s ready for the busy school year ahead.”
NAPA offers these two tips – make sure your car is caught up on basic maintenance and make sure your tires are in good shape.
“After a busy summer, your car needs a good once over. Start by topping off the windshield washer fluid and checking the wiper blades to be sure there are no nicks or tears. You should also check the oil and change it if necessary, especially if your child is about to take the car to college,” NAPA says. “Check to make sure all the lights are working. This includes headlights, turn signals, brake lights, and parking lights. Replace any lights that are burned out. It’s also the perfect time to change air and cabin filters that have collected plenty of summer dirt and dust.”
As for tires, take a look to see if you note wear, tear, or other problems.
“If you see any wear, then take the tires to be inspected by a professional. You might need to have your wheels aligned and the tires replaced. Finally, even if they don’t look worn, make sure the tread isn’t worn out using the penny trick. Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head above the tread, then it’s time for new tires,” NAPA says.
