Need new tires? Tracy’s Automotive on Maple Street, or one of our other locations, can help you find the set that’s best for your wallet and your car.
Maybe it was the huge monster truck tires but you found yourself driving home after the Monster Jam thinking about needing new tires. It’s a bad time financially but you don’t see a way around a new set – your current tires are as slick as a stick of butter.
Then the idea hit – how about buying a set of used tires? They might not be great but they’d be better than what you’ve got now. Not only are they less expensive than new, but, as lifehacker.com points out, they’d keep those tires out of landfills for a bit longer. However, as lifehacker.com explains, there are many more cons to driving on used tires. Among them:
“Lifespan: Unless it was never driven, the treads will be worn on a used tire and the rubber will be older, so it likely won’t last as long as a new tire of the same quality.
“Recalls: If a used tire is recalled, no one will tell you.
“The unknown: Even if you check the treads and tire very carefully for wear and damage, you can’t really know all the stresses that a tire had been put under by its previous owner.
“Limited (or no) warranty: While some sellers offer warranties on used pre-owned tires, they’re going to be much shorter than the four, five, or six-year warranties you can get for new tires.”
The pros of new tires far outweigh the cost, lifehacker.com says:
“They’re safer: According to AAA’s research, driving on relatively worn tires at highway speeds in wet conditions can ‘increase average stopping distances by a staggering 43 percent, or an additional 87 feet.’
“They will last longer.
“You know exactly what you’re getting.
“It is usually easier to find the tires you need.
“The treads are even.
“They generally come with a warranty.”
