Over-inflating your tires can make them wear out sooner and damage your car.
You were busy on the internet over the weekend while you waited for the kids to finish exploring the Sedgwick Zoo. Among the ads was a story giving advice on ways to prolong the life of your car and its tires. One suggestion: Inflate your tires to the maximum pressure on the sidewall. That’s a great way, the article said, to increase the mileage you get from your tires.
Sounds good and you’re thinking of trying it. But that’s not a wise idea. Inflating your tires to the max will give you a bad ride and can damage both your tires and your car.
Familyhandyman.com explains: “Driving a normal load on over-inflated tires reduces rolling resistance, which can increase your mileage slightly. But several negative effects outweigh this small benefit.
“Over-inflation increases stopping distances, causes the tires to slip and hydroplane on wet roads, and reduces the life of the tire. The harder tires also absorb less impact vibration so they transmit more road shock to your entire suspension system, causing a rougher ride. Worse yet, the additional tire bounce wears out your car’s struts, strut mounts, shocks, springs, ball joints and control arms much faster.”
If you want your tires and car to last, your better move is to check your owner’s manual and keep your tires inflated to the degree recommended by the car’s manufacturer.
