Falling Temperatures Mean It's Time for Auto Care | Wichita Auto Care

October is National Fall Car Care Month. It’s a perfect time to get your car ready for the cold, rain, sleet, ice and snow that are ahead.

Now that it’s October, the record heat that has plagued Wichita is predicted to cool off. The lower temperatures will also usher in the possibility of rain and thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. But October is known for more than cooler weather and Halloween. It’s also National Fall Car Care Month.

“Before Old Man Winter makes his appearance, now is an excellent time to start planning for driving in rain, snow and icy conditions,” tire manufacturer Continental says. “Most of us will drive in some sort of wet weather at some point this fall and tire maintenance is key to helping you navigate those winter roads.

Continental offers several tips to help you get your car winter ready. First, check your tires – pressure, tread, alignment, and so on. If something is wrong, now’s the time to find out and get it fixed before you have to handle slick roads. You should also consider changing your tires to winter tires to cope with those slippery roads.

Continental suggests you should also check your brakes and charge your battery.

“Fall is an ideal time to have your brake system checked. Brakes are necessary for vehicle safety and extremely important when driving on icy or snow-covered roads. A full inspection should include brake linings, rotors and drums,” Continental says.

Continental adds, “Check your battery connections to make sure they are tight, clean and free of corrosion. Cold weather can be hard on batteries so you’ll want to check your battery and charging system. If your battery is more than three years old, you may want to replace it since there are no warning signs for a failing battery.”

While you’re having your car checked over, don’t forget to make sure your heater and defroster are working and that your windshield wipers are in good shape to clear ice, frost and snow.
