Safety when driving in the rain is not only a matter of driver care, it’s also a matter of the right equipment and the right tire care.
If the Weather Channel is right, we’re going to see some wet weather here in Wichita early next week. If you don’t plan to go anywhere, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But if you have to go somewhere, you’ll likely be driving on wet roads, which is always a risky proposition.
Tiresafety.com notes that data from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration shows that 73 percent of weather-related crashes happen on wet pavement. But, of course, there are things you can do to make the drive safer.
Those start with being more careful while driving – slowing down, turning on your lights, keeping a safe distance between you and any vehicles ahead of you, and avoid sudden braking or jerky movements.
That’s not all. Tiresafety.com also notes that you can make sure your car is in good shape, especially its windshield wipers and tires.
First, make sure you have the right tires for your car and style of driving.
“Too many drivers buy tires based on initial price or appearance. For optimum performance in the rain, select a tire with tread design and rubber compounds that provide enhanced wet weather driving capabilities,” tiresafety.com says.
Once you have the right tires, you need to take care of them.
“No tire can provide good wet traction once the tread is worn below 2/32 of an inch (1.6 mm) tread depth,” tiresafety.com says. “Check your tires regularly and replace them at the proper time. Also, be sure to maintain the proper inflation pressure in your tires; check your vehicle’s owner’s manual or the door jamb for the proper air pressure for your tires.”
