CapitolOne.com says you are equally correct in thinking the fluid’s color and consistency can be traced to its origin. For example, watery, clear liquid is likely from the air conditioner or exhaust. This is normal so you can generally ignore it.
The story is different if the puddle is fluorescent green, blue, pink, orange, or yellow. If it smells sweet it could be a result of a loose clamp. But, if you’re not so lucky you might have a broken water pump or a crack inside the radiator or heater core.
If the fluid is an oily and black, amber, or brown, it’s probably coming from the engine. And, if the puddle grows, you need to get your car inspected. While you’re at it, you should also have your car’s braking system inspected. Because a yellowish color fluid that smells sort of fishy, could mean your braking system is the problem. And, if you think your brake system has a leak, you should immediately tow the car to the ASE certified brake techs at Tracy’s Automotive.
