Like the song says, “The weather outside is frightful.” That’s what much of Kansas awoke to this morning – frightful weather from near-blizzard conditions.
“Meteorologist Jake Dunne says the Arctic cold front has moved across all of Kansas and it is a dangerous start to the day. Temperatures around, and below zero are combining with north winds gusting to 40-50 mph to produce feels like temperatures between -25 and -45. Frostbite is possible to likely on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes,” according to kwch.com.
Kwch.com adds, “Areas of snow and blowing snow will continue through the morning, and 1-3 inches of accumulation is expected. The before mentioned north winds will create near blizzard conditions, at times, especially north and northeast of Wichita on highways like I-135 and the Kansas Turnpike. Travel is not recommended this morning, but improving conditions are expected this afternoon.
“The wind will subside some tonight, but gusts between 25 and 35 mph will produce feels like temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero, and our weather alert continues on Friday for the extreme temperatures.”
The state is warning of hazardous driving conditions, particularly in the north where “black ice” has been reported. Black ice is the clear ice (called black because the color of the roadway shows through) that can be hard for drivers to spot, which makes it extra hazardous for cars, pedestrians, and others.
It’s certainly adding up to a morning best spent with hot chocolate and a cat or dog to cuddle under a warm blanket. But for some, it’s impossible to stay put until the weather subsides. If you’re one of those who has to travel – locally for last minute gifts, maybe; or farther away to visit relatives and friends for the holidays – then be careful and watchful.
But also be sure your car is ready to survive the trip – especially the tires and the brakes. Both need to be in top working order.
