The recent weather and its smattering of snow have left no doubt – winter is here. And while it’s supposed to be milder this week, if you drove around on slick roadways, you may be one of the drivers who’s wondering if it really makes sense to switch to winter, or snow, tires.

Are they worth the effort and expense? Well, yes, according to experts. One tire expert told the Detroit Free Press that the “difference a winter tire makes is almost unimaginable.”

The Free Press explains: “Any day now, a few million drivers will make their vehicles safer in a way most Americans never consider — by switching to winter tires. It costs money, but less than most people expect, and the difference in steering, accelerating and braking is enough that drivers in many parts of the world wouldn’t consider trusting the same tires on a sunny, 90-degree Fahrenheit day and a damp, 40-degree one, much less in an actual winter storm. …

“‘There’s no comparison of braking distance. Not just on ice and snow, but also on wet, cold and slippery surfaces.’

“Part of the difference is obvious: Winter tires, sometimes called snow tires, have different tread patterns. Like an iceberg, though, 90% of the substance is hidden under the surface. Winter tires are made of rubber compounds created to improve traction at low temperatures. The tread’s ability to grip snow or disperse water is almost beside the point.”

While that is true, the real decision comes down to you and your needs. If you park your car at the first sign of winter and don’t move it until the spring thaw, you may not need or want winter tires. If you drive long distances daily on icy, cold roads, you probably need them.

To make the right decision for you and your safety, you should have a conversation with a trusted tire technician like those at Tracy’s Automotive.
