Never leave a child or pet in a hot car even if the auto air conditioning is on.

It just seems that it was a few weeks ago when bitterly cold weather was seeping into your bones. Now, Wichita has reached the opposite extreme with extreme heat warnings because of a late spring heat wave. With that heat wave comes a reminder: NEVER EVER leave a child or a pet in a hot car – even for a minute. To do so is to risk major injury or death.

“In just 10 minutes, a car can heat up by 20 degrees and become deadly,” said Megan Cooper, spokesperson, AAA – the Auto Club Group. “We are urging parents and caregivers to not underestimate the risks that excessive heat can pose and to understand that hot car deaths are preventable.”

That advice applies even if you leave the car running and your auto air on. The auto air could malfunction or a pet or child could accidentally cut off the engine or the auto a/c. Don’t take the chance.

Although you don’t want to leave the car running, you do want to make sure your auto air is working while you’re driving. You want to make sure your passengers – child, pet, or adult – are comfortable during your drive, no matter how short. And, you want to make sure the driver – that’s you – are equally comfortable so you can pay attention to the road.

It makes sense to have your car air conditioning checked out by an auto air technician and have it fixed if something is wrong because it’s going to be a long, hot summer.
