Furthermore, because the mixture is often firing at the wrong point in the cycle , the engine does not run smoothly but jerks and rocks badly on its mountings (and sometimes backfires ). The problem can be so bad that the engine runs on for a minute or more if left alone.”
Running on is caused when the “fuel/air mixture in the cylinders ignites without a spark.” That can happen if you’re using the wrong grade of gas; if the spark plugs are defective or the incorrect grade; if the carburetor needs tuning; or if your car’s ignition timing is faulty. It can also happen if the car has a carbon buildup in the system.
The important thing to know is that you should not ignore it.
“Running-on is not good for your engine and it can cause serious damage if you allow it to go on for too long,” howacarworks.com warns.
