The color of smoke spewing from your exhaust can give you a clue about the cause. Tracy’s Automotive can help fix the problem.
You were headed back from taking the kids to the Big Bug exhibit at Botanica when you glanced in your rear view mirror and saw smoke. You pulled over to the side of the road, got out and, sure enough, smoke was pouring out of your exhaust.
“Should your car ever have smoke come from the exhaust? Well, a small amount of white, vapor-like smoke at startup is nothing to worry about. Condensation will leave some water residue in the exhaust system, and this water will have to get burned when you start the car. Once the engine comes up to temperature, the vapor should stop and nothing will be visible from the exhaust,” according to motorbiscuit.com.
Motorbiscuit.com adds, “You don’t have to be an expert mechanic to see the signs of trouble with your car. Knowing the different types of smoke that may come from your exhaust, and addressing problems before they get worse, could mean the difference between a simple repair and a complete rebuild, or even a new car.”
Color is one major clue to the origin of the smoke.
White smoke that has a slightly sweet smell generally is a sign your car is burning coolant. This can happen if you have a faulty head gasket, a cracked cylinder head, or a cracked engine block.
Black smoke, on the other hand, is a sign the engine is burning too much fuel. You might be able to smell the fuel that’s causing the smoke. Leaky injectors, a bad fuel regulator, or faulty sensors are all possible causes.
Blue is the most common smoke color. It indicates your engine is burning oil. Possible causes include worn piston rings, or valve seals, a failed PCV system, cylinder wear, or a faulty head gasket.
