Time to 'Spring Ahead' | Wichita Auto Care

The changeover to daylight saving time is a signal that spring is almost here. Time to make sure your car is ready for the warmer weather and spring road trips ahead.

Tonight’s the night when you turn your clocks ahead one hour for daylight saving time. That means, of course, you’re going to lose an hour’s sleep. AAA Kansas is warning drivers to be aware that the time change could mean that you’ll be drowsy when behind the wheel.

“When the clocks change, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas, who was cited in a recent news story. “Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment and motorists need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday.”

Stewart added, “”As many Americans struggle to balance their busy schedules, missing a few hours of sleep each day can often seem harmless,. But missing just two to three hours of sleep can more than quadruple your risk for a crash, which is the equivalent of driving drunk.”

So be sure to get enough sleep and to turn your clocks back tonight. It’s not just the clocks in your home. Be sure to also change the clock in your car or truck. While you’re doing that, it’s wise to take some time to prepare your car for springtime.

Checking your tires and windshield wipers should be at the top of your list. So should a tune up.

Gobankingrates.com explains, “You’ll read that you should check your fluids when winter passes, top them off if necessary, and check your belts, hoses and brakes — and all that’s true. But are you really confident in your ability to identify worn brakes and loose belts? If so, have at it, by all means. If not, consider getting a pre-spring tune-up, particularly if you clipped a few bad potholes over the winter, if it’s an older car or if you have some other reason to worry.

“The term ‘tune-up’ is an intentionally vague catchall phrase that describes an experienced professional examining and inspecting your vehicle and paying close attention to the things that are most likely to fail.”
