It's Freezing. Take Care of Your Car | Wichita Auto Care

It’s no fun driving in icy, snowy weather. You definitely don’t want to be stranded in a snow bank. The Wichita auto care specialists at Tracy’s Automotive can help keep your car running all winter long.

In Wichita, the news is focusing on the weather and the expected winter storm and dangerous wind chills expected for the next couple of days. That’s the cue to stay warm inside with maybe a bit of outside fun to build snow people or have a snowball fight with the kids.

Unfortunately, most of us can’t stay at home in blissful warmth, sipping on hot chocolates until the spring thaw. We have to get out, shovel snow and drive on slick roads. The best thing you can do to stay safe while driving in wintery conditions is to take care and also to make sure your car is in good working order. After all, you don’t want to crash but you also don’t want to have your car die and leave you stranded, which can happen if your battery goes dead.

That’s why checking your battery and replacing if if necessary is tops on a list by consumerreports.org of winter car care tips.

“Your vehicle’s battery is especially hard hit when the mercury plummets. Cold temperatures reduce its cranking power. In fact, at about 0° F, a battery has only about half the cranking power it has at 80° F,” consumerreports.org says.

Consumerreports.org also suggests you change your windshield wipers frequently and make sure you entire windshield and windows are cleared off. Be sure to check your oil and tires.

“Cold weather can beat up your engine, too. Motor oil thickens when cold, making it harder for the engine to turn over,” according to consumerreports.org. “While the car is in the shop, have the radiator and heater hoses checked for cracks, leaks, or contamination from oil or grease. The hoses should be firm yet pliable when you squeeze them. Scrap them if they feel brittle or overly soft.

“Try to keep your coolant mixture in a 50/50 ratio of antifreeze and water. This will keep your coolant from freezing until temperatures are well below zero. Colder conditions, however, can call for a 60/40 or 70/30 ratio. Under no circumstances should you use a higher antifreeze-to-water ratio than this.”

If you need help doing any of these, or if you find your car needs a bit of repair, then it’s time to call the Wichita auto care specialists at Tracy’s Automotive.
