“Colder temperatures can change how well motor oil keeps your engine running. You may need to change the oil to maintain a smooth ride all winter,” familyhandyman.com says. “Colder temperatures thicken up and slow down motor oil. If the oil can’t move easily through the engine, it puts a strain on your car battery (which is already working harder in the winter) and your starter.”

Familyhandyman.com notes that, when people talk about “winterizing your car,” they’re generally referring to a change in the weight of the oil. A lighter oil is easier for the engine to use in winter than a heavier oil. But, you don’t want to go too light or the oil won’t lubricate the engine components because it will go through the system too fast.

So, what’s the best oil weight? The one recommended by your owner’s manual.

“Generally, 5W-30 is widely recommended because it’s actually good to use year-round. If you’re using a higher viscosity oil than that, your user manual may recommend changing to a lower viscosity for the winter,” familyhandyman.com says. “Just be sure not to go lower than the recommended viscosity because if the oil is too thin, it won’t provide enough lubrication for the engine.”
