Cars can be hard to start in cold weather. If you’re having problems, have the Wichita auto care experts at Tracy’s Automotive check for problems.
It’s that time of year when the weather in Wichita seems to be all over the place – chilly or even freezing in the morning then warm and pleasant in the afternoon. It’s hard to know how to dress. You put on heavy clothes in the morning and, by afternoon, you’re sweltering. But don’t put on heavy clothing in the morning and you feel as if you’re about to freeze.
Your car may also be having problems with the weather. It can be fine in the afternoon but hard to start in the frosty morning air. Auto.howstuffworks.com says it’s not unusual for cars and trucks to have a hard time starting in cold weather. Any number of reasons can account for a cranky car. Among them, according to auto.howstuffworks.com:
- “Gasoline, like any other liquid, evaporates less when it is cold. … When it gets really cold, gasoline evaporates slowly so it is harder to burn it (the gasoline must be vaporized to burn)” and start your car.
- “Oil gets a lot thicker in cold weather. … So when you try to start a cold engine, the engine has to push around the cold, gooey oil and that makes it harder for the engine to spin. In really cold places people must use synthetic motor oils because these oils stay liquid in cold temperatures.”
- “Batteries have problems in cold weather, too. … The chemical reactions inside of batteries take place more slowly when the battery is cold, so the battery produces fewer electrons. The starter motor therefore has less energy to work with when it tries to start the engine, and this causes the engine to crank slowly.”
It can be hard to decide if difficulty starting is simply a function of cold weather or an indication of something wrong with your car. If you’re not sure, or if your car continues to give you trouble, it’s time to talk to a trusted auto care specialists like the mechanics at Tracy’s Automotive.
