Winter Temperatures, Winter Tires | Wichita Tires

Yes, winter tires are worth it. If you’re not sure what tire to put on your car now that cold weather is here, talk to the Wichita tire specialists at Tracy’s Automotive.

Snow, ice, cold temperatures have made their way into Wichita and more is on the way. Now’s the time to change from your summer, or all-weather tires, to winter tires. Or, if you never changed from winter tires last spring, it’s time to take a good look at your tires to make sure they’re up to the task of coping with icy, slick roads.

Some drivers hesitate when it comes to getting a set of winter tires (or snow tires as they’re popularly known) because they’re not sure if they’re worth it. But, as extremetech.com points out – the short answer is yes. Yes, they are worth it.

Winter tires, the tire-industry-preferred term for snow tires, make a significant difference in driving when it snows. Or when there’s snow on the ground, or slush, or ice,” extremetech.com says. “Most mainstream cars come with all-season tires, and they’re every bit as effective as a single-piece bathing suit for surfing, competitive swimming, and showing off (or hiding) your body: There are compromises. They do reasonably well in snow, and less so going up or downhill, or braking hard, or maintaining grip if you go around a corner too fast.”

Winter tires, on the other hand, “are designed for cold as well as snow. A winter tire is made from a softer rubber compound that retains grip in below-freezing weather. It also has a more aggressive tread,” extremetech.com says.

If you don’t buy the winter tires with super big studs, you can drive with them all year round, but extremetech.com cautions: “Winter tires wear out something like twice as fast as regular tires in warm weather.”

It’s best to switch to summer or all-season tires after the threat of snow and low temperatures are gone.

If you’re not sure what tire is best for you, your car, your driving style and needs, then have a conversation with a trusted Wichita tire technician like the tire pros at Tracy’s Automotive. They can help you choose the right tires and help you care for them so they last longer.
