You hopped in the car the other morning and turned on the ignition. As usual, all the dashboard lights came on. Not as usual, the tire pressure – TPMS – light didn’t go off. It stayed lit. Now you’re wondering if something is wrong with your tires.

There could be something wrong with your tires – a small leak perhaps. Or, the reduced pressure in your tires could simply be a reaction to the cooler weather we’ve been having in Wichita. Cooler weather makes the air in your tires contract with the result that your tires suddenly become underinflated. The TPMS light comes on in a lot of cars at this time of year. If that’s all it is, a few squirts of air should solve the problem.

What you do not want to do, however, is simply add some air and go on from there. If you don’t inspect your tires, you could be missing something. And you don’t want to ignore problems with your tires.

“Maintaining your tires is the single most important thing you can do to insure the safety of your car, truck, or SUV – and by extension, your life and those of your passengers,” according to cars.usnews.com. “Driving on tires with incorrect air pressure … means disaster could strike any time – and at any speed.”

Your first step if your TPMS light comes on is to take a look at your tires to see if there’s anything obviously wrong – cracks, lack of tread, nails, etc. You should also consider how flat the tire is – does it obviously need air? You should also measure the inflation in your tires yourself.

If you see something wrong, it’s clearly time to get a Wichita tire pro to help. But, even if all looks and seems okay, it’s wisest to have a Wichita tire pro check out your tires, add air and maybe rotate  and balance them, especially if it’s been awhile since you’ve had your tires maintained.
