If you’re not sure what’s the best tire for you and your car, have a talk with the Wichita tire pros at Tracy’s Automotive.

Life is slowly returning to normal after weeks of lockdown. Now it’s time to look consider things you should have done the past few weeks but let slide. One of those things is switching from winter tires back to summer or all-weather tires. Or, if you didn’t switch tires, it’s still time to take a look at your tires to see how they fared over the winter and to have them serviced or replaced, if necessary.

Tire shopping can be tricky. There are many tire manufacturers and each one has several tires to choose from making your decision less than straightforward.

“For most people, tires come in three distinct flavors — summer, winter or all-season,” says. “Each is designed for a specific set of parameters, which are different between brands, and each has particular pros and cons. It’s vital to understand what each tire can and cannot do while comparing their abilities to the driving conditions you’ll likely be experiencing.”

Summer tires, as their name implies, are best in hot weather – when temperatures are consistently above 45F.

“Summer tires are made from a softer rubber compound and are typically fitted with large tread blocks to give maximum contact with the road in warmer weather. As a result, summer tires generally have more grip in both wet and dry conditions and provide optimal cornering and braking capabilities,” according to

All-weather or all-season tires, on the other hand, are likely the type tire that was on your car when you bought it. says of all-weather tires: “They can perform adequately on dry or wet roads, or roads that have a light snow. However, you should think of all-season tires as a “jack of all trades, master of none” solution. All-season tires may perform adequately on dry, warmer pavement, but they won’t give you the handling and grip levels of a summer tire. They may have a longer life than summer or winter tires, and they can get you up to the ski slopes, as long as that mountain road is only lightly covered with snow. Even then, however, they won’t stop and corner as well as winter tires can when the weather turns cold.”

In the end, the best tire comes down to your budget, the weather, and the type driving you plan to do. If you’re not sure what’s best, discuss your options with the tire pros at Tracy’s Automotive.
