The Colorado Department of Transportation suggests that, before you get on the road, you make sure your car is in safe operating condition. Specially, the CODOT says to make sure these systems are working: windshield wipers (be sure they have enough fluid), heater/defroster, antifreeze, lights, fuel system (should have a full tank of gas), ignition, exhaust system, tires and tire tread, battery, and brakes.
