Tiring Decisions | Maple Street Tires

Tracy’s Automotive will help you decide if you should use winter tires or if all-weather tires will get you safely through snow, ice and sleet.

You were headed home from taking the kids to see Dinosaurs After Dark when it suddenly occurred to you that it’s been a long time since you had a new pair of tires. When you got home, you took a look at your tires and, sure enough, the tread was worn and almost bald in spots. It’s clearly time for a new set of tires.

Your tires need replacement at a difficult time of year – when seasons are changing from summer to winter. With that change, comes a big tire decision – do you buy all-weather tires and hope they’ll get you through the winter? Or do you get a set of winter, or snow, tires and then get another set of all-weather or summer tires when the spring thaw hits next year?

What to do? What to do?

The solution to the winter or snow tires vs. all-season tires question will depend on where you live and the conditions in which you drive,” tire manufacturer Bridgestone says. “If you only see a few snow flurries each year and slick, icy roads are more of a fluke than an annual ordeal, all-season tires are probably the way to go. But if you know there’s a period when icy roads are always an issue, mounting winter tires isn’t an over-the-top precaution – it’s an essential safety measure that could save your life.”

Bridgestone explains that is because, while all-weather tires can handle some winter driving challenges,  snow, or winter, tires are engineered specifically to cope with icy, snowy roadways. Among those improvements are rubber designed for cold weather and rubber tread designed to better grip the road.

While that is all good to know, it might not help you in deciding what’s best for you and your car. The best way to decide is to talk with a trusted tire technician, like those at Tracy’s Automotive, about your situation – your driving style, your driving needs and so on.
