Winter weather is hard on cars but keeping an eye on your car will go a long way to making sure your car survives the winter.
Wichita got away with a fairly warm weekend – at least compared with people in the northwest. But our burst of warm weather isn’t predicted to last long. Low temperatures and snow are expected to return this week.
The break in temperature gives car owners a chance to check up on their vehicle to make sure it’s not succumbing to the harsh weather. That way, you’re less likely to be stranded next to a snow bank.
The main problem most drivers encounter is the battery, according to kttc.com. You should get it tested to make sure it will hold a charge to get you through the next Arctic blast. The other common issue drivers see during cold snaps is low tire pressure.
“As temperatures drop, your tire pressure drops. … You’re going to lose one pound of pressure for every 10 degrees in temperature change. So, if you go from 30 degrees down to 20 below, you’ve lost five pounds of pressure. Which might be enough to turn your tire pressure light on or even cause a flat tire if your tires are already under inflated.
“As temperatures go down, the rubber compound in tires get harder and will skid around more on the road and ice. … Winter tires, or snow tires as they used to call them, are invaluable in some of these conditions because the rubber stays softer and more pliable in cold temperatures. So, they give you better traction and obviously more safety that way.
“It’s also important to keep up with oil changes and make sure to check that the coolant, anti-freeze and other fluids in your vehicle are able to withstand the sub-zero temperatures.”
