Looking Ahead to a Colder Than Normal Winter | Auto Care Maple Street

If predictions come true, this winter will be colder than usual. Tracy’s Automotive can help you prepare your car for the rough weather ahead.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a reputation for correctly predicting weather. And this year, the Almanac is predicting that Wichita’s winter will be colder than usual.

“Winter will be colder and drier than normal, on average, with the coldest periods in mid- and late December, early and late January, and early to mid-February,” according to the Almanac. “Snowfall will be below normal in the north and above normal in central and southern areas. The snowiest periods will be in late December, early January, and mid-February.”‘

Experienced drivers know what that means – dead batteries, tires with low pressure, frozen gas lines, corrosion and rust, and/or a frozen motor.

“There are several ways that winter weather can cause damage or extra stress on your vehicle’s working parts. Wet weather and freezing temperatures combine to create harsh conditions that can harm your car’s exterior, interior, and even the motor,” neighbor.com says. “Your car doesn’t seem delicate, but it has a variety of running parts and other features that require maintenance and care to keep it in great shape.”

Neighbor.com says you should test or examine these mechanical parts of your vehicle:

  • Heater
  • Rear Window Defroster
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Hazard Lights and Dome Light
  • Battery
  • Belts and hoses

Checking your fluids is equally important – “Your vehicle depends on a variety of fluids to keep it in peak running condition. If you’re unfamiliar with fluid receptacles and how to check and change the fluids in your car’s motor, have it serviced by a professional. Still, it’s important for all drivers to have a basic understanding of the changes your car should undergo to be prepared for freezing temperatures.

  • Coolant
  • Oil
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Window Washer
