If the dreaded check engine light comes on, don’t panic – go see the Wichita auto repair experts at Tracy’s Automotive.

You’re driving to Field Station for the dinosaur Spring Break Sneak Peek when your check engine light comes on. Your first reaction is a sinking feeling. If you’re like many drivers, your next reaction is hoping it will go away if you simply ignore it.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. It isn’t going to disappear if you ignore it. Your best move is to find a reliable Wichita auto repair technician like those at Tracy’s Automotive and find out what’s going on. At best, it might not be serious. At worst, you’ll catch it before the problem gets worse.

A lit check engine icon can have many causes. Some of them, such as a loose gas cap, aren’t very serious. Others are more serious and can become catastrophic over time if not quickly found and fixed.

According to yahoo news, some of the most common reasons for a check engine light to come on are a loose gas cap; a faulty catalytic converter; problems with your spark plugs, ignition coil, or spark plug wires; failure of your mass airflow sensor; or a dead battery.

Although a check engine light does give you notice that at least one of many auto systems has a problem, yahoo news cautions that the light should not be used as an indicator that your car needs maintenance.

“The check engine light provides an idea — sometimes precise, sometimes vague — of what’s wrong with a car. However, it does not replace a skilled mechanic or routine maintenance,” yahoo news says. “In other words, don’t wait until the check engine light comes on to address your car’s maintenance needs. The ECU is not going to warn you that the water pump is about to fail, that one of the ball joints is worn, or that the A/C will stop blowing cold air in mid-August. The engine light will only come on after a system error has already occurred. In some cases, the damage from that failure can be catastrophic.

Car maintenance requires a two-pronged approach. Routine and preventative maintenance will address common issues before they fail, and timely diagnostic maintenance will take care of new or changing sounds, smells, or how it feels.”

The bonus is that the routine maintenance may prevent problems that would cause the check engine light to come on in the first place.
