Before you set out on a day trip, be sure to check your tires to make sure they’re road safe.
For Father’s Day, you decided to take the family on an impromptu road trip to Mushroom Rock State Park and have a picnic before heading back home. It’ll be fun for Dad but, more importantly, the kids will enjoy being outside and away for awhile.
While this Father’s Day also serves as the official beginning of summer, it’s also noteworthy for another reason. It’s in the first part of “tire-blowout season,” which began in mid-May and runs through about early October, according to Popular Mechanics.
“The reason more tires fail from late spring to early fall is simple: That’s when the outside temperature is the hottest, and when motorists are driving farther, and faster, in more heavily loaded vehicles,” Popular Mechanics says. “The combination can push a neglected or injured tire beyond its breaking point. ”
Popular Mechanics adds this warning: “However, tire failures can happen any time of year, especially in the warmest parts of the United States. Besides heat and overweighted cars, other major bad guys for tires include lack of proper air pressure and, of course, impacts with obstacles.”
All that is especially important for drivers to remember before they set out on those spur-of-the-moment, unplanned road trips, like the one to Mushroom Rock State Park. It’s why you should at least take a look at your tires and check the inflation before setting pedal to the metal and getting on the road. A flat tire would spoil your good time. A blowout could be deadly.
It’s also why drivers should be especially vigilant about tire care – making sure their tires are properly inflated at all times and checking your tread monthly to make sure there are no bald spots or cracks along the sides of your tires. If there are, you may need new tires. Just because you’re not on the road doesn’t mean a flat or blown out tire is any better to deal with.
