Most car manufacturers suggest you change your air filter every 12,000 miles. Tracy’s Automotive can help you with that!
You happened to glance in your rear view mirror on the way home from the State Fair and saw black smoke coming from your exhaust. You’re not sure whether to panic or not.
It’s too early to panic. While exhaust smoke can indicate many problems, the most likely cause of black smoke is a clogged air filter. The remedy is simply to change your air filter. While the simplicity of the solution is good, don’t let it lull you into ignoring the situation. A clogged air filter can lead to other – bigger – problems.
“A vehicle air filter is an easy to replace project but many times forgotten. An internal combustion engine needs air to be mixed with the fuel. This air comes in through the air filter. Without adequate air intake, the fuel mixture will be too rich with gas to burn properly, and the engine can be starved of needed oxygen,” according to autos.com.
Autos.com adds, “There are problems associated with a clogged or dirty air filter, and the symptoms can be different depending on the size and type of engine you have in your vehicle.”
Other indications you have trouble caused by a clogged air filter include the smell of gas in the exhaust, lower gas mileage, engine backfires, and/or rough engine noise.
