Is Your Car's A/C Ready for Hot Weather? | Maple Street Auto Care

It was a cold winter but now hot weather is on its way. Tracy’s Automotive can help make sure your car’s air conditioner will keep you cool.

After a rough winter, the warm days of spring and summer are a welcome change. But, all too soon, those days will turn from pleasantly warm to sweltering and sweat-inducing. That’s when you’ll turn your car air conditioner on and hope it will cool things off. But what it it doesn’t? Few things are worse than being hot and sweaty and having to drive a car that’s even hotter because it’s been sitting in the sun each day.

But there is a remedy – get your auto air conditioning checked now. If there are any problems, get them taken care of before the hot weather sets in.

“Summer’s arrival means your vehicle’s air conditioning system is going to be under a serious strain before long. If you haven’t had your system serviced in a while, now’s the time,” driverside.com says. “While most newer vehicles may simply be able to get away with having their A/C recharged, older cars and trucks may require a little extra attention.”

Your system may only need recharging. If your auto air has a problem, it could be a leak or and issue with the comperessor. Driverside.com explains:

“Once you take your car in, technicians will measure the amount of pressure in your system, and if it’s low, they’ll add enough to get the reading within your manufacturer’s specifications. They will then run your car for a few minutes with the A/C on high and use a special thermometer to measure the system’s output. If it’s not within the necessary parameters, you may have a leak somewhere in your system. …

“An air conditioning compressor is usually driven by your vehicle’s serpentine belt, and as it spins, it pressurizes the system’s refrigerant. Simply put, it’s this change in pressure that cools the air coming into your cabin. An A/C compressor spins at a dizzying rate, and the more you use the cool side of your thermostat, the more likely it is to eventually fail or leak.”

The best way to keep your compressor running without problems, driverside.com says, is to have your auto air conditioner serviced once a year. The Wichita auto air specialists at Tracy’s Automotive can help you with that, or with repairs, if needed.
