Auto Care Myths | Wichita Auto Care

Some “truths” about car care are anything but true. Tracy’s Automotive can help you keep up with your auto care.

You decided not to hit the road this July 4. Instead, you’re sticking around for Wichita fireworks and other events. Part of the reason you decided to stay home is your car – you didn’t have time to have it checked out before heading out on the road. That might not be so bad, but you’ve also been neglecting your regular auto care.

You’re right to be concerned about the lack of auto care. But have you really been as neglectful as you think you have been? AAA offers these well-known car maintenance tips and points out which are accurate and which are simply myths:

Change your oil every 3,000 miles. No, that’s not necessarily true, AAA says. The appropriate length of time between oil changes depends on many things – including the make and model of your car and the type of oil. Your best bet is to unearth your owner’s manual and stick to the schedule suggested by your car manufacturer.

The typical car battery lasts for five years. Wrong. AAA says, “Typically, a car battery lasts between three to five years and sometimes longer but driving habits and climate are both big factors in affecting battery life. … The bottom line: if your battery is approaching the three-year mark, the only way to know for sure its condition, is to get it tested.”

Brake fluid does not need to be changed. Wrong. AAA says brake fluid should generally be changed at least every two to three years. “t is important to follow this schedule since brake fluid attracts and absorbs water, which can corrode internal brake system parts and lead to failure or other costly damage.

A trusted repair shop can also be a great resource when it comes to deciding on the services your car needs,” AAA says. “Listen to the experts and while you may be tempted to prolong maintenance to save money, by doing so you could end up with more costly repairs down the road.”
