It might be tempting to try to save money by buying used tires, but it’s risky. Consumer advocates advise against it.
You’re considering taking a road trip in the near future. Perhaps a ghost town trip to explore many of Kansas’ supposedly haunted locations. But before you get on the road, you know you need some new tires. And you’re wondering if it’s safe to buy used tires.
Consumer Reports says that’s a no – don’t buy used tires.
“Don’t buy used tires: you don’t know where they have been or how they’ve been used. The tire could have been driven overloaded, underinflated, or to excessively high speed. Any one or a combination of these factors could lead to internal damage not visible from the outside. In short, the used tire could be unsafe,” Consumer Reports says.
Consumer Reports adds, “It’s true that some tire dealers sell used tire take-offs, and a lot of individuals sell tires online and through local newspapers. But you’re taking a risk not knowing anything about the tires’ past history. All new tires are registered to the buyer for direct notification in the event of a recall. That link is broken if you buy used tires. You may not even know if the tire has been or will be a subject of a recall.”
It’s true that, if you buy a used car, you’re also going to be buying the used tires that come with the vehicle. But that gives you a chance to see the possible condition of and care the tires received because you can see the vehicle itself and can ask for records showing the maintenance, if any. Without that, Consumer Reports says, you could be buying a dangerous problem.
“Tires age and can degrade over time,” Consumer Reports says. “An old, unused spare tire can be past its prime and unsafe to drive on, as well. Don’t risk buying a tire without a known history.”
