It's Hot Out There | Wichita Battery

Hot weather drains your energy. It also drains your car’s battery. If your car battery dies in the heat, call Tracy’s Automotive for help.

This summer has been hot. So hot that weather forecasters have, at times, warned people to be careful because of the dangers posed by extreme hot weather.

You’re not the only one suffering from the heat. So is your car and its battery. The nonprofit Car Care Council points out that “contrary to belief,” hot temperatures are the real culprit when it comes to damaging your car’s battery. In fact, the council says, excessive heat and overcharging are the two most frequent reasons that batteries give out. The heat causes the battery fluid to evaporate and thereby damage the internal structure of the battery.

When most motorists think of dead batteries that cause starting failure, they think of severe winter weather, but summer heat is the real culprit,” said Nathan Perrine, executive director, Car Care Council. “Many battery problems start long before the temperatures drop. Heat, more than cold, shortens battery life.”

There are ways to prolong battery life.  The council suggests:

  • Making sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.
  • If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, checking it regularly, especially in hot weather. Adding distilled water when necessary.
  • Replacing a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified.
  • Keeping the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

The council adds, “Driving habits such as frequent engine on/off cycles will cause more wear on the starter than a simple back and forth to work. Other factors include driving and weather conditions, mileage, vehicle age and excessive electrical draws like in-vehicle entertainment systems. Check the battery if you notice headlights and interior lights dim, accessories that fail to operate, or the ‘check engine’ and/or battery light illuminated.”

Of course, all batteries eventually have to be replaced. When you’re looking for a trusted auto mechanic to replace the battery, perform routine maintenance, or repair your car, then call the reliable auto care specialists at Tracy’s Automotive.
