Before you set out on a road trip, make sure your car is up to the task.
You know travel is a bit iffy these days. But you’re really tired of having to stick close to home. And a day trip to see the world’s largest ball of twine just isn’t going to cut it. You need to get away.
You’re not the only one who feels that way. And, if you plan appropriately, a bit of travel could give you a break and a happier outlook. That planning should include making sure your car is ready to hit the road – especially important if you’re not good about keeping up with regular auto care.
“Long road trips can test your vehicle’s strength and not every part in a vehicle gives you fair warning,” says Lauren Fix, in an article on tripsavvy.com. Fix is an ASE-certified technician, race car driver, and award-winning author of three automotive books. “When going on a road trip, it’s important to have your vehicle’s brakes, tires, and fluids checked, along with any moving or rubber parts that can fail and leave you stranded on the side of the road.”
Tripsavvy.com says these “items should be checked at least every six months (or sooner, depending on the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule)—spring and fall, before the weather changes—and also before heading out of town: oil change…tires…brakes…windshield washer fluid and wiper blades…battery…interior and exterior light bulbs…cabin air filter…inspect for leaks, smells, and noises.”
Ideally, these checks should be done at least two weeks before you hit the road. That not only gives you plenty of time to get the work done, it also gives you a chance to drive around town to make sure everything is working well.”
