Before You Get on the Road | Wichita Tires

If you don’t check anything else before you get on the road, at least make sure your tires are in good shape.

Summer is traditionally a time when folks just want to get away from it all. That hasn’t changed, but, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel is expected to be down this summer. That said, AAA is still estimating that Americans will take 700 million trips – most of them by car – this year.

“Americans will get out and explore this summer though they’re taking a ‘wait and see approach’ when it comes to booking and are likely to book more long weekend getaways than extended vacations,” said Paula Twidale, AAA’s senior vice president of travel. “When they do venture out, travelers will take to the road with 683 million car trips to satisfy their wanderlust.”

While it’s always wise to make sure your car is ready for a trip, it’s especially important this year with the uncertainty about what might be open. Nothing is worse than getting out on the road and breaking down, unless it’s getting out on the road, breaking down, and being unable to find a trusted mechanic to help you.

It’s particularly important to make sure your tires are ready for the road. Consumer Reports says, “These [tire] checks should be performed monthly, but it’s especially important to do one before embarking on long driving vacations. A flat tire or other tire problem can be an inconvenience when you’re far from home, and the heat that can build up in tires over a long drive at high speeds can make these problems worse.

That tire check should include making sure the tire pressure is correct – your tires should not be over- or under-inflated. You should also check to make sure you have enough tread and that there are no bald spots on your tires. You should also look at the sides of your tires to make sure there are no cuts or bulges. And, you should check the age of your tires.

“Some automobile manufacturers recommend replacing tires after six years even if you haven’t worn them out. CR recommends that any tires more than 10 years old should be replaced, regardless of wear,” Consumer Reports says.
