Brakes are at the top of the list when it comes to important safety features on your car. Make sure they stay in top condition.
The recent temperature change has left Wichita with mild weather perfect for enjoying outdoor activities, whether it’s a walk through the gardens at Sims Park or something more intense, like a long bike ride. The weather is also perfect for road trips to destinations (near or far) that give you a chance to get outdoors and simply enjoy the last bit of summer and the first days of autumn.
But, before you head out on any trip – even one around town – be sure your car is ready for action. Nothing spoils a good time like a car’s breaking down. Take your brakes, for example, they’re a prime safety feature on your car. If they fail, then your life and the lives of your family, passengers and other drivers are at risk.
“When it comes to vehicle safety, the brake system is at the top of the list,” said Nathan Perrine, executive director of the non-profit Car Care Council. “A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of driving conditions. Motorists can put a stop to any potential brake system problems by recognizing the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair.”
How do you know if your brakes need repair or replacement?
The Car Care Council offers these suggestions: “If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, they should be inspected. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing.”
But just because you’re not feeling or seeing any of these warning signs, you should not put off a routine brake inspection because the truth is that brakes are going to wear out. It’s a fact of life. And it’s better to repair or replace your brakes before they totally fail you.
